Little Shop of Horror Review
By Bruce Hawkins
I'm not usually one to attend a play, but "The Little Shop of Horrors" seemed like a good place to start, and it was. There was a full house, mingled with Drifters, ready to share great entertainment focused on the fanciful recollection of a unique and funny Hollywood film classic.
The original movie was about an awkward, reclusive, young florist assistant dealing with a crush on his female employee counterpart and his own dead end life. His dream girl was no less crushed by her own lack of importance and the constant belittlement of an overly obnoxious boyfriend, whose mainstay in life was inflicting pain on others, especially as a dentist.
To this lackluster, lost in the hood, florist shop comes a miracle__an alien plant form focused on satisfying its gruesome diet while maintaining a persona heavy on character. And here I end the story line to say "ya shoulda been there!
The characters were excellent, the songs light and lively, and the plant was MAGNIFICENT! In my opinion, seeing the original movie proved to make this play that much more fun and remarkable. The actor playing the florist assistant never lost character and was a show-in for the original movie. The mean spirited boyfriend, the dentist, seemed to play his part with robust enthusiasm, maybe a bit to well. I still ask myself: could he really be that mean in person?
In the end, a great play and a great time!
PS: Even the sale of small, man eating plants was entertaining (ok, ok, I lied, fly eaters, they were). The salesmen ranted like an old time panhandler, teasing and taunting each potential customer to adopt an unlikely friend.
Costa Rica Trip Review
By Bruce Hawkins
The Drifters enjoyed the dry season with balmy 90 - 95 degrees and sunny days. The pool was much appreciated on a daily basis and drinks were readily available at the swim up bar. Additionally, the view from the pool included the ocean. The Pacific Ocean was always accessible and the water was warm.
Activities included the zip line as people slide down a line in a harness through the tropical forest canopy. Going and coming to the zip line in all terrain vehicles was icing on the cake. Other activities included: a shopping excursion in Liberia, a visit to a volcano, and a tropical walk in the Rain Forest to see exotic plants, insects, etc.
The traditional dish for Costa Rica, rice and beans, were served daily at the hotel. The hotel food was good and appreciated in addition to going into town, Playa Flamingo, for more exotic dishes. A popular restaurant in town was Maria's and the Monkey Bar was a favorite retreat for cold drinks with a great view.
